When I woke up, I expected today to be just like yesterday. We would look at the Kona Inspired results and I would await to see the news segment that we recorded with NewsFix 39:
I was also awaiting to see how some of my friends and fellow runners did in the Boston Marathon.
One 78 year old man, Bill Iffrig, was just about to cross the finish line of his 30 something marathon in approximately 4 hours and 10 minutes. This time means a lot to me, because based on my own personal pace, that is about the same time that my family would have been at the finish line watch me finish. All of a sudden the concussion of a homemade bomb, in what may have been in a coffee can, exploded 5 feet away from Bill and knocked him off his feet. People scream and scrambled away from the scene when another bomb goes off approximately 100 yards away leaving 100+ severely injured and 3 dead. There may be more that may not make it in the future hours.
This tragedy will make us go through all the stages of grief and question a lot of things in the coming days. We will all be angered if someone claims responsibility or is charged with this crime. Several "What if" questions will be generate, but does it really matter?
Ultimately, we must keep everything in perspective and pray for all of those that have been impacted by this event during their time of loss. Tomorrow is not guaranteed for any of us, and our lives can change in an instant. We must take advantage of every second to show how much we care for those we love every time we get the chance. Nobody knows if may ever get to see them again.
No matter what, everything happens in this world for a reason, and we cannot take advantage of time or put off something that we can do TODAY.
Ultimately, we must do what Bill did. In his own words, “After you’ve run 26 miles, you’re not going to stop there,” Bill got up after being knocked down and finished the race.
Let's press on to honor those that were lost and show those that performed this terrorist act that we will not let them distract us from living.
