H.O.P.E. Flag

Th H.O.P.E. (Helping Others, Providing Education) flag is an idea I came up with to honor and inspire families affected by congenital birth defects. It is covered with the names of children that are affected or have lost their life to congenital birth defects.  It is always with me for every party of my journey including endurance events, speaking events, and efforts to write better legislation regarding birth defect awareness.

If you have or have lost a loved one affected by birth defects, please fill out click the green button to honor their journey and life. We will personally place our your loved ones name of the flag, take a picture, and email the picture back to you. We will also keep you informed on what finish line the H.O.P.E. flag will cross next.

What does the flag represent?

The H.O.P.E flag is stands for Helping Others; Providing Education. Each part of the flag has some symbolism in it. Here are some examples:
  • H is colored periwinkle because that is the official awareness color for the congenital anomaly that two of the Pratt Pack 5 are affected by: Tracheal Esophageal Fistula (TEF).  Amy and her husband have 4 of 5 children born with a birth defect.
  • O is colored in lime green because that is the official awareness color for the congenital anomaly that Avery suffered from before he passed on: Gastroschisis
  • P is colored in Red because that is the official awareness color for the congenital anomaly that Liam had before he passed last year: Congenital Heart Defect (CHD)
  • E is colored in blue because that is the official awareness color for the congenital anomaly that Jaden is affected by: Hydranencephaly
  • The sun represents our willingness to reach the far ends of the earth to provide education, hope, and help through Shawn's Anomaly.
  • The skyline in black represents Houston (Where Shawn's Anomaly started) and also how the world overshadowed awareness for the leading cause of infant deaths, Congenital Birth Defects, until Shawn's Anomaly started.
  • The different color houses represent that congenital anomalies comes to each home differently.
  • You can see the swimmer, biker, and runner representing those that have dedicated their race to raise awareness through Team Shawn's Anomaly!
  • In the ocean you will see fish that are in the shape of an infinity sign representing that we will not stop our campaign to help families and make others aware of congenital birth defects.
Artist, Community Leader, and Co-Founder of the Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston M.O.C.A.H., Rhonda Adams, personally organized a workshop to paint the H.O.P.E. flag which adds to the uniqueness of this mission and makes the flag a one of a kind.

Rhonda Adams is a native Houstonian and life artist whose style of artwork can be described as healing forms. With more than 30 years of studio experience, Rhonda’s paintings incorporate color and movements that are playful and visually intriguing.  Her designs offer visual affirmations that inspire, encourage and satisfy all that experience its presence. “My art is a reflection of my life’s experiences though color, form and movement.  Each creation is conjured by empowering emotions.”, says Rhonda.

By 2000, Rhonda’s passion for promoting social wellness through community creativity lead to the collective vision, with husband and creative partner Reginald, as co-founders for the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH). Included in the MOCAH family of programs, Rhonda also serves as director for the Art Angels Healing Arts Program, a program that provides art as a tool to help promote and advocate social wellness for various support groups. Rhonda has worked extensively with community based service organizations, hospitals and schools to provide opportunities for creative interaction with many.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” This is your chance to make change how the world views birth defects. It will take a little from each of as a community to make this happen  Please help us achieve that mission supporting our fundraising efforts by donating to our mission at www.shawnsanomaly.org When a community comes together towards the same mission the mantra "Anything Is Possible" is accelerated beyond measure!
